Let’s look at the steps you can take to publish your children’s book so you can get it out on the shelves and into the hands and hearts of little ones.

1. Understand Your Audience

Seems simple enough, right? However, it is something you need to consider seriously. Are you writing for two-year-olds or 10-year-olds? The writing style is vastly different for these age groups.

Children’s fiction is split into four categories:

• Picture books – Under five years old
• Early readers – Five years old and over
• Chapter books – Six to nine years old
• Middle grade – Eight to twelve years old

Editors want to know if yours is the kind of book they can sell. If you haven’t taken the time to refine your writing according to the ages of the children you want to target, you may find it harder to get published.

2. Keep Editing Until It’s Perfect

Just like you, editors are busy people. They don’t always have much time to edit manuscripts. It’s your job to write and rewrite until it’s a work of art.

A quality final copy is especially crucial for picture books or early readers books, where the word count is lower. Keep at it until you can perfect it no more.

3. Find a Literary Agent

The role of the agent is to promote your book to a publisher and negotiate the best deal possible for you.

Finding a Children’s Book Agent is critical. Publishers rarely accept submissions from writers without agents.

4. Submit Your Manuscript Directly to the Publisher

If you choose not to go down the literary agent path, you do have the option of going direct to the publisher yourself. However, it would be best if you searched for publishers that accept unagented submissions. You can try an updated list for 2019 here.

5. Self Publish

Using a Print on Demand services such as Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing and IngramSpark offer writers a way to cut out the middleman and self publish.

Once you have your book printed, you can contact online bookstores such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble to sell your book for you.
